The Dutch manager then revealed that Valdes refused to play for the reserve team last season, prompting him to now axe the former Barcelona shot-stopper.
“He is not selected because he does not follow our philosophy,” said Van Gaal.
“There is no place for one player [who does not do do that].
“The philosophy is how you play football and how you maintain your match rhythm.
“For example, he refused last season to play in the second team. That’s also one aspect of our philosophy but there are a lot of other aspects of how you have to play in our philosophy in Manchester United.
“When you are not willing to follow the principles of the philosophy, then there is only one way – and that is out.”
Asked if he was selling Valdes, Van Gaal replied: “Yes. For us it is a big disappointment because we thought he would follow our philosophy.
“Then he is fit to play. But when you are not playing in the first selection, then you must play in the second selection. Every player has to do that and he refused to do that.”
“It’s a pity because we have given him the opportunity to rehabilitate and also gave a contract to him of course.
This will come as a big blow to the Red Devils due to David de Gea’s expected transfer to Real Madrid this summer, meaning that if both goalkeepers leave, then the club will be forced to search for a replacement in the transfer market.
However, despite De Gea’s contract expiring in a year’s time, the 24-year-old could still remain at Old Trafford this season due to United’s reluctance to sell unless they get Sergio Ramos in the other direction.
