Tottenham Hotspur may yet enjoy a triumphant campaign, but hopes of winning the Europa League are admittedly slim.
Spurs simply haven’t produced the kind of consistency needed, but Ange Postecoglou will no doubt be buoyed by his side’s turnaround victory over AZ Alkmaar to set up a quarter-final tie with Lyon.
That victory preceded more misery on the Premier League front, however, with Tottenham being defeated at Fulham on Sunday to keep them mired in 14th place.
Even if hands are placed on an elusive bit of silverware, chairman Daniel Levy knows plenty has to change this summer, and though incomings are to be expected, Tottenham will need to get rid of some of the rot.
Hopes were once high, but Yves Bissouma looks likely to be on that list.
Why Yves Bissouma must be sold
When Tottenham signed Bissouma from Brighton & Hove Albion for £25m in 2022, he arrived with a weight of expectation as one of the division’s and indeed, one of Europe’s most exciting young midfielders.
However, the 28-year-old’s presence has slowly ebbed away, riddled with tactical and disciplinary issues under Postecoglou’s wing last season and now reduced to a bit-part role in the Australian’s second campaign, starting only 14 top-flight fixtures and making five errors, as per Sofascore.
His woes were epitomised during Tottenham’s recent defeat, hooked at half-time for the second Premier League game in succession, and the third since January.
Withdrawn early against Fulham, reporters questioned Bissouma’s performance to Postecoglou, who in turn admitted he felt the Malian “sometimes lets the game drift by him.”
With just over one year left on his £55k-per-week contract, it’s high time Tottenham cash in on their struggling star, at least claiming some recoup.
Selling him would not be a bold move, however, after the interminable period of strife down N17, more drastic measures may well be taken.
There’s one player in particular who could be sold on, even though he’s, ostensibly, one of the best on the books.
Levy should sell £165k-p/w Spurs star
Spurs have suffered their share of problems this season, with injury blows chief among them.
After all, when your starting centre-backs – Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero – are both sidelined for the second winter period in succession, cracks are going to show.
Despite this, Levy may want to consider cashing in on the latter. Now, Romero is one of the most talented defenders in the Premier League, aggressive and tenacious, technically gifted and stylish.
However, the Argentina international has missed quite a few matches due to injuries and disciplinary problems since first arriving from Italian club Atalanta for £42m in 2021.
He’s an “incredible” defender, as said by correspondent Alasdair Gold, but an inconsistent one all the same.

As per TEAMtalk, Real Madrid are now interested in signing Romero this summer as they seek new defensive parts. It’s said he’s valued by the Londoners at around £60m.
Romero’s issues are beginning to suggest this figure might be worth taking, especially when considering he’s one of the club’s top earners at £165k per week – some three times more than the beleaguered Bissouma.
While Romero is one of the most talented players in Postecoglou’s brood, he’s also among the most profitable.
If Real Madrid or the like come calling with offers worth £60m, it may be that Levy takes the cheque and redirects it toward new players, capable of shaping a new era at Tottenham.
Spurs could sign striker who's "more complete than Haaland" for bargain fee
Tottenham have been presented with an opportunity to sign a 14-goal forward for a reduced price.
