da prosport bet: Liverpool may be forced to invest in their defence in January as the injuries mount up, so could they make a shock move for Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld?
Why do they need him?
Joel Matip is set to miss the entire Christmas period with a broken collarbone, and it’s not the first time the Cameroonian centre back has missed considerable time through injury.
The same could be said for Joe Gomez, who has already suffered two serious injuries in his Liverpool career, and will miss around six weeks with the fractured leg he sustained at Burnley.
With Trent Alexander-Arnold a doubt for the visit to Manchester United as well, Jurgen Klopp’s defensive ranks are looking worryingly thin, and a January move may be a necessity rather than a luxury.
Given Alderweireld is yet to show any signs of extending his Tottenham contract, which expires next summer, could the Reds shock the Premier League by signing the Belgian international?
Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below...
Could it happen?
At this point it seems glaringly obvious that Daniel Levy and Tottenham are not going to splash out the type of wages Alderweireld wants. With the risk of losing him for free next summer looming large, Spurs could sell to the highest bidder in January.
Liverpool don’t spend the amounts that the likes of Manchetser United and Manchester City do, but the Reds have proven since Klopp’s arrival that they will splash the cash for the right player, and Alderweireld shouldn’t need too much convincing to join Klopp’s revolution.
Is he good enough?
With all due respect to the ever-improving Gomez, Alderweireld would be an immediate starter in the Reds’ back four, and could form a dominant partnership alongside Virgil van Dijk.
The pair’s reading of the game, positioning and leadership would be absolutely superb, and he is also a brilliant passer of the ball, something both Mauricio Pochettino and Klopp expect from their centre backs.
The 29 year-old has suffered with injuries of his own in the past, but he has started 14 Premier League games this season, and it’s no surprise that Spurs fell apart when he didn’t start the North London Derby.
Gomez could even learn a thing or two from the experienced Tottenham ace, and by the time the 29 year-old’s age becomes an issue Gomez will be in his prime and ready to take over.
So, Liverpool fans, would you back a January move for Alderweireld? How much would he cost? Is he better than Gomez? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…
