Since the 2015/16 campaign first got underway for West Ham, Slaven Bilic has certainly experienced a series of highs and lows whilst trying to do the business for the Hammers in the club’s last ever season at the Boleyn Ground.
From famously beating the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City away from home, to subsequently failing to pick up three points from any of the recently promoted teams so far this term, the Upton Park manager, and faithful, have most definitely had a great deal to keep them occupied in one way or another… and there could be more developments in January.
With Dimitri Payet, Manuel Lanzini, Diafra Sakho, Winston Reid and Victor Moses remain frustratingly side-lined for at least the foreseeable future, Bilic may be forced to act next month in order to avoid witnessing his current Hammers outfit slide dramatically down the league table.
So then, as the east-end club reportedly held a strong interest in Chelsea’s Loic Remy throughout the course of the summer transfer window, should West Ham now reignite this potential transfer deal and look to bring the 28-year-old French striker to Upton Park?
Well, such a move would have likely have stood a greater chance of taking place had it cropped up in any other Premier League season – but as Chelsea currently find themselves struggling amid a possible relegation dog-fight in 2015/16 – the Hammers may find it somewhat difficult to prise Remy away from Stamford Bridge.
Jose Mourinho’s side simply need all the help they can get this term, especially in the striking department. Although some reports seemingly point towards a lack of future for Remy with the current league champions, it remains hard to imagine the Blues wanting rid of any potential goalscorer at this current stage in the proceedings.
The former QPR front-man showed what he was all about last time out for Chelsea, scoring his side’s only goal in what turned out to be a very painful loss for Mourinho against Leicester City. When it comes to showing real composure in one-on-one situations, providing his teammates with excellent movement inside the final third and simply doing the business in front of goal more often than not for whichever team he represents, Remy is a player who rarely disappoints.
His hunger and passion for goals make him standout somewhat at Stamford Bridge, for although both Diego Costa and Radamel Falcao possess more defined reputations within the grand scheme of things, their lack of energy up-top for Chelsea has only served to weaken Mourinho’s side this season.
However, as the Blues have since been linked with a whole host of different strikers in the run up to the January transfer window, Remy could potentially be deemed surplus to requirements when all is said and done. Chelsea have seemingly viewed the former Newcastle United loanee as nothing more than a well-paid substitute in the past, who can only really shine up-top in the odd cameo appearance from the bench.
Someone of Remy’s reliability should arguably be offered more of a first team role in the Premier League in all honesty, for whenever the French international has been given a sustained run among the English top-flight, he has always shown himself to be an out-and-out goalscorer who can be trusted to give his all.
West Ham would greatly benefit from such an asset on board this winter, even if the player in question may have to drop his reported hefty wage demand for a move. Remy himself would certainly develop into an even better striker with some guaranteed first team action at the Boleyn Ground this season, and would likely thrive with the current brand of football trying to be established down at Upton Park.
So then, although this particular deal may very well hinge on Chelsea’s final decision in January, West Ham should still do everything within their power to land the 28-year-old front-man as soon as the opportunity justifiably presents itself.
