da pinup bet: According to reports in The Sun, Southampton are set to battle with Premier League rivals Newcastle United and West Bromwich Albion in the race to sign Napoli midfielder Allan this summer.
da prosport bet: The Sun says that despite the fact that the 26-year-old has been a regular for the Italian giants over the course of the last two seasons, they are willing to let him leave for the right price before the start of the new campaign next month.
Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino is keen to bring in some new players this summer, according to The Sun, as he looks to put his own imprint on his squad having taken over from the sacked Claude Puel earlier this month.
So far the south coast outfit have only signed Poland Under-21 international Jan Bednarek, but the Napoli midfielder may soon be making to move to St Mary’s too if they can see off the competition from the Magpies and the Baggies.
Here are three reasons Southampton must win the race to sign Allan…
Qualities
The Brazilian is a tenacious central midfielder by trade and it is an area that Southampton need reinforcements in if last season is anything to go by.
Saints really lacked energy and legs in the middle of the park and that is something that Allan would bring to the team, and he showed how highly he is rated by Napoli by the fact that he made 39 appearances in all competitions last season, including eight in the Champions League, scoring one goal and providing a further five assists.
The 26-year-old proved how comfortable he is in possession with a passing accuracy of 86% in 29 Serie A appearances last term, while he showed his ability to run with the ball and beat opponents by successfully completing 39 take-ons.
Price tag
The Sun says that Allan is available for just £10m, and considering how turbulent the summer transfer window has been with overinflated price tags, that could turn out to be something of a bargain.
The Brazilian looks to be exactly what Southampton need in the midfield and the fact that he is approaching the peak years of his career make it an even better deal.
Saints’ current club-record signing is Sofiane Boual after they brought the Morocco international to St Mary’s in a £16m deal last summer, and Allan would certainly be more in their price range then some of the other players they could be interested in.
He knows Gabbiadini
Southampton only signed Manolo Gabbiadini from Napoli during the January transfer window and not only does that mean that they should have a good relationship with the Serie A side, but it also means that Allan will know the striker well.
That previous working relationship in Naples could help them quickly link up effectively on the pitch for the Saints if they beat their Premier League rivals to sign the Brazilian, and help the 26-year-old hit the ground running having never played in England before – much like Gabbiadini did earlier this year.
