It’s not often that I find myself agreeing with Sandro Rosell. The narcissistically inclined Barcelona chairman, who seemingly has a negative opinion on everything about English football, has called for an end to the agent’s fees that clubs are forced to play. The Barcelona President said at a press conference in Dubai yesterday:
“I have always asked myself why, when an agent is representing a player and he comes to negotiate his contract with the club, why is the club paying the agency fees? When he is defending the other party and what he wants is to get the maximum number for the other party and, at the end, you have to ay the commission to the agent, it doesn’t make sense. This is something I would ask Uefa to change as a rule.”
He’s right of course. When you really consider it then the situation does indeed seem somewhat farcical. The agent’s sole purpose is to get the best possible deal for their client. The agent is not a necessity, they are a luxury in which the player feels the need to indulge. Whether they do so for counsel or to get more money will vary from player to player but ultimately it is a service for the player, not the club. Therefore it should be the player that pays for the service. When you need a job and you go to a recruiter they take a percentage of your salary, they do not simply earn their money from the company you end up working for. It is you, the person in need of the recruitment service, that will end up paying because you have benefited. No other industry would pay for what is essentially a personal lawyer that does no end of tasks for you.

I can understand arguments for the clubs having to pay the fees. For example if it were the case that club A had ‘x’ amount of money they were willing to give away in contract negotiations and the agent merely got some of that money that would have otherwise gone to the player. Then despite the player not handing over any money directly they would in theory be paying the agent. However it seems unlikely that that would be the case. Players will want certain wages and it is more likely than not that the agent’s fee would be a separate issue.
It might be more acceptable for the clubs to pay these fees if the demands of the agents were perhaps less extravagant. If they were offering a reasonably priced service then clubs might be more willing to pay them. However revelations made such as those by Alex Ferguson indicate that that is not the situation. The Manchester United manager revealed that agents’ demands had included conditions such as being bought an entire block of flats.
It might seem unfair that the players would have to surrender a portion of their wages to an agent and then pay them a fee on top of that, therefore essentially paying them twice. However as I mentioned before: agents are a luxury and not a necessity. Therefore if the players choose to bring such an extravagance in to the equation of a contract negotiation, they should be prepared to pay for it. After all when the club is forced to pay for something, the fans are force to pay. Next time your club signs some prima donna with a money grabbing agent, think about how much of your hard earned money you spend on your club anyway, and how you don’t need some leach sucking out an extra £1m from your fan funded club every time they sign a player.
